Keeping to source material

For these designs I wanted to incorporate the style of the original location, this was surprising as not many old Japanese buildings followed such a curved structure. They often followed a square frame which meant it was harder to draw inspiration as I felt dishonest towards the source material. This is why I decided to look at smaller buildings instead of temples.

I took great inspiration from the older buildings. My concepts follow the story of a character devoted to Shinto rituals so decorates their house with shides.

With my visit to the Kyoto gardens I wanted to translate the beauty I saw them by focusing on the nature of the scene. Having an extremely tidy garden was interesting, it suggested high maintenance and thus pride in the building. This would go to show the respect and devotion to the building.

As there was a structure that could not be changed by the door of the building I tried to twist it into the design by using beads as a doorway. However I did not feel that fit with the character as someone high in pride and wanted to focus on the classical sliding door often used in Japan.
