Location of character.

After looking at the piratical elements of location and how it can be used to tell the story of a character I wanted to look at the characters. Who would live where and why?

Spiderwick Chronicles written by Holly Black and illustrated by Tony DiTerlizzi, tells the story of a family moving into a house in the middle of no where when the three young children find a mysterious book titled Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World around you. Within this book are the details of the magical creatures living around them, each adapted to their location. The Long-Necked Gargoyle is said to sit on an old cathedral in Paris and with its extended neck and excellent vision it can watch what happens below. Each aspect has a form and function even described as smelling like wet cement and the dirt of bird that land during the day. Changing location underground these creatures called Knockers mimic the sounds of miners by tapping against the walls and continue their own mining when alone. I can see the inspiration used in the designs; the cloudy eyes and pale skin due lack of sun. The long whiskers to help movement and the long fingers for digging all match up with the location. I find these designs inspiring, I want to create something similar and see if I could build a creature that has an immediate sense of location without description.
